Internship

Internship is among the services offered by the Health Laboratory Practitioners Council. This service is provided twice a year, in the months of October and April. It is offered to a Health Laboratory Practitioner who has graduated with a Bachelor's degree from a recognized institution, either within or outside the country. Applications for this service are made online through the HPRS system when the Internship application window is open.

The main requirement for the applicant is to ensure that their application for provisional registration at the Bachelor's level has been approved by the Registrar's office. Therefore, once the application window opens, the applicant will select the internship site where they wish to undertake their internship. However, there is a restriction preventing applicants who studied at an institution that has a hospital which accepts interns from returning to do their internship at that same hospital.

It is emphasized that the Registrar's Office will not be involved in changing an applicant's internship site, as the process solely involves the applicant selecting the site where they wish to undertake their internship. Before the internship application window closes, an intern is allowed to change their selected internship sites in the HPRS system, provided the desired site has available slots/capacity. After the window closes, internship applications will be reviewed by the Registrar's Office for approval, and the applicant will receive confirmation regarding the sites they applied for. This service will require the applicant to undergo a 12-month internship at the approved internship site.

Upon completion of the internship, the practitioner will be required to obtain an internship transcript, which serves as proof of completing the internship and as a requirement for being allowed to sit for the Full Registration Examination.

After the completion of internship, the internship certificate will be issued by the Registrar’s Office upon receiving the intern’s application accompanied by the internship transcript
